Your crew has the certification to go further out, into waters thousands of feet deep where the rarer species live. In the near-shore zone during winter months, you'll search for humpbacks, spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, manta rays and flying fish. Push into the pelagic zone and the hunt expands to pilot whales, beaked whales, sperm whales, spotted dolphins and whale sharks. The tour duration gives the crew more time to search and more chances to linger with what you find.

You leave from Honokohau Harbor, where the boats (Artemis and Apollo) are built for the open ocean. Comfortable seats, onboard bathrooms, dry storage and spacious viewing areas mean you're not cramped or cold. A professional naturalist is aboard the whole time, constantly scanning the water and explaining what you're seeing. Cold beverages are complimentary throughout. If no whales show up, the tour is free.

Can I see humpback whales year-round on this tour, or is there a season?

Humpback whales are present during the winter months. The near-shore zone where they gather is part of every tour, but your best chance to see them is between roughly November and April. Outside that window, the crew searches the same waters for spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, manta rays and other species.

What's the difference between the near-shore and pelagic zones you mention?

The near-shore zone runs along the Kona coast in shallower water, where humpbacks, dolphins and manta rays stay. The pelagic zone is deep ocean thousands of feet down, where pilot whales, beaked whales, sperm whales and whale sharks live. Most tours can only reach the near-shore. This one is US Coast Guard offshore-certified to go into the pelagic zone, which very few operators do.

How long is the tour, and what should I bring?

The tour runs two and a half hours. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. Cold beverages are provided, and the boats have onboard bathrooms and dry storage for your belongings.

What happens if we don't see any whales?

Whales are guaranteed on this tour. If none appear, the tour is free. You don't pay.
