The experience

The day starts at your resort with pickup, then heads south into Kona coffee country to Bay View Farm, a twenty-four-acre working farm on the slopes of Mauna Loa. You'll walk through the coffee trees, see the processing happen on-site, and taste Kona coffee at an overlook above Kealakekua Bay: the same bay where Captain Cook's monument stands on the only British soil in the United States. From there the route crosses through South Kona and Ka'u Districts, passing lava flows and dry forest visible through the tour vehicle's windows before stopping at Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, where you can walk the sand and watch for honu (Green Hawaiian Sea Turtles) feeding offshore or resting on the beach.

The centerpiece is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where you visit the Kilauea Visitor's Center, stand at the Kilauea Iki Crater Overlook, and walk through Volcano House to view the smoking and steaming Kilauea Caldera. The route then drops into the lush eastern side of the volcano to Big Island Candies for a chocolate factory tour and sample. The final major stop is Waipio Valley Overlook, the Valley of Kings, where thousand-foot waterfalls plunge to the valley floor and wild horses roam the taro fields below, a landscape that has been farmed the same way for a thousand years.

A deli-style lunch and bottled water are included throughout the day. The tour operates as a small group with a live English-speaking guide. Hotel pickup is included from either Kona resorts or Waikoloa and Kohala resorts, depending on which option you choose at checkout.
