A forest hike through wildflowers and ferns, then wine tastings at Stone Wall Creek, 12 Spies or Yonah Mountain Winery

This 8-hour activity from Atlanta combines a challenging hike through Georgia's Rabun County wilderness with wine tastings at one of three local vineyards. You trek either the Bartram Trail, a designated National Recreation Trail through rolling forest, or Mount Yonah, a difficult climb rising from the Southern Appalachian foothills 90 miles from the city. A guide trained in First Aid and CPR leads the hike, provides a picnic lunch of turkey, flatbread, hummus, nuts, berries and seasonal greens, then takes you to taste four to six wines. Meet at Andy's Market in Clayton, Georgia to start.

The experience

The hike itself is the draw. You choose between two routes: the Bartram Trail, which rolls through forest thick with wildflowers, mosses and ferns, or Mount Yonah, a steeper challenge that rewards climbers and hikers alike with views across the foothills. Mount Yonah is rated difficult, so the moderate fitness requirement is real. This is not a casual walk. The guide carries First Aid and CPR certification, which matters on a mountain trail.

Halfway through, you stop for a picnic lunch your guide brings: turkey meat, flatbread, mustard, hummus, nuts and berries, plus seasonal greens from their organic farm. It is built to refuel you for the second half of the hike, not to linger.

After the hike, you head to one of three wineries (Stone Wall Creek Vineyard, 12 Spies Vineyard or Yonah Mountain Winery), for four to six wine tastings. The guide leads this part too. You need to be at least 21 to drink, and children from age 13 can join the hike and the winery visit (though they won't taste the wine). The whole day runs 8 hours from start to finish.

Is this one for you?The 8-hour commitment means you'll need most of a day, but it leaves room for breakfast before or dinner after in Clayton. If you want a shorter outing or plan to explore other parts of Atlanta the same day, this hike-and-wine combination fills the entire window and does not split easily.
