itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Austin's weird culture and sights

  • Meet Twisted Texas guide
  • Listen to local musician play
  • Visit live music spots
  • Try local food truck snacks
  • Stroll across Lady Bird Lake
  • Take photos of murals
  • View downtown skyline
  • Learn weird Austin stories

I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect to start my day in Austin listening to a guy with wild hair strumming Johnny Cash in the front seat of a bus. But that’s exactly how the Weird Austin City Tour kicked off—our guide (I think her name was Sam?) just grinned and said, “You ready for some stories you probably won’t believe?” And then we were off, weaving through downtown while the musician played something twangy and people on the sidewalk waved back at us like we were part of the show.

The first stop was this mural—bright colors everywhere, paint peeling just a little at the edges. Sam told us about some artist feud over tacos (apparently that’s serious business here), and I swear you could smell breakfast tacos from the food truck across the street. At one point she pointed out a guy in a tie-dye suit handing out flyers for his band. No one even blinked. That’s Austin, I guess.

We got out for a walk across Lady Bird Lake—it was humid but breezy, and you could hear cicadas buzzing under all the city noise. Someone asked about the bats under the bridge and Sam launched into this whole story about why they’re here (I still can’t believe it’s over a million bats). She handed out some weird local snack—I think it was spicy pecans? Not really my thing but hey, when in Texas. The live music kept going between stops; at one point we all tried to sing along but only managed to get half the words right. Nobody cared.

I keep thinking about that moment when we stopped for photos against another mural—the sun came out just enough to make everything look extra loud. There was this feeling that everyone around us had their own story going on, like we’d just dropped into someone else’s day for a second. Anyway, if you want to see Austin’s weirdness up close (and maybe hear some questionable singing), this is probably your ride.
