Paddle a clear kayak from the spring source and watch the riverbed pass beneath you

Kayak the San Marcos River near Austin in a clear 2-person kayak with an Olympian guide who teaches paddling technique as you float from the spring source downriver. The two-hour trip includes a lifejacket and covers wading, optional swimming, and moderate paddling on a river known for its clarity. You'll be paired with another paddler if booking solo, or you can reserve your own kayak.

The Experience

The San Marcos River starts as a spring and flows clear enough to see the bottom as you paddle. You launch at the source and float downriver for two hours, which means the current does some of the work—you're not fighting upstream. An Olympian guide paddles alongside, offering paddling tips and tricks as you go, plus information about the river itself. The clear kayak is the real difference here: you sit in a boat you can see through, watching the riverbed, fish and plants move past below the waterline instead of just water around you.

This is a moderately physical activity. You'll wade in the river at the start, have the option to swim if you want, and paddle for the full two hours. A lifejacket is included. The 2-person kayak holds up to 425 pounds, so if you're booking alone you can either pair with another solo paddler or reserve your own kayak and paddle it by yourself. Either way, the guide stays with the group and keeps the pace steady enough that paddling tips actually stick.

Top questions

What's the San Marcos River like when I'm paddling it?

The San Marcos River is spring-fed and stays clear year-round, so you can see the riverbed, plants and fish through the bottom of the kayak as you float downriver. The current carries you along, and the water is calm enough for the guide to teach paddling technique without shouting.

How much paddling experience do I need?

No experience is required. The Olympian guide teaches paddling tips and tricks as you go, and the river's gentle current means you're not fighting the water. You do need a moderate level of physical fitness because you're paddling for two hours and wading in and out of the river.

Can I kayak alone, or do I have to share?

The kayak is a 2-person boat, so you can either pair with another solo paddler or book your own kayak and paddle it by yourself. Either way, you're with the guide and the group for the full two hours.

What happens if I want to swim during the trip?

Swimming is optional and encouraged. You're on a calm spring-fed river with a guide present, so if you want to jump in and cool off, you can. The lifejacket is included and stays with you the whole time.
