The Experience

You launch from the shore and paddle into the shallow waters where Assateague Island's wild ponies live. The kayak sits low enough that you move quietly through their habitat, and the guide points out what to watch for—the ponies themselves, bald eagles, herons, and whatever else the refuge holds on the day you go. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, just across the water, is the second half of the route, and the same animals move through both places depending on the season and the tide.

The kayak is either a single or a tandem, depending on what you book, and the paddle and personal flotation device come with it. Two and a half hours is long enough to cover both islands without rushing, but short enough that you're back on land before the afternoon turns.
