The Experience

“You ever try to pedal up a hill in Asheville?” That’s how our guide, Mark, broke the ice as we wobbled onto our e-bikes near the River Arts District. I’m not sure if it was the smell of roasted coffee drifting from some warehouse or the way the morning light bounced off those wild murals—either way, it felt like we’d landed right in someone else’s daydream. Mark pointed out a mural of a giant blue heron and told us about the artist—apparently she painted it after a hurricane nearly washed this whole area out years back. I didn’t expect to start thinking about floods and art in the same breath.

The e-bike made everything feel easier than I thought—especially weaving through shady paths along the French Broad River. The breeze smelled like wet leaves and river stones (if that makes sense). We passed a guy painting outside his studio; he waved with paint all over his hands. My partner tried to say “hello” in his best Southern accent and got a laugh for his trouble. In between stops, Mark told us which houses dated back to the 1890s—some with porches bigger than my apartment. We ended rolling through what used to be a horse track turned park—Mark had stories for every spot, even if he did forget which president once stayed at the Inn (pretty sure it wasn’t Nixon?). Anyway, three hours went by fast. Felt like seeing Asheville’s whole personality in one loop.
