Step-by-step itinerary
Anchorage winter photography tour
- Photograph float plane at seaplane base
- Drive through Kincaid Park, watch for moose
- Stop for wildlife viewing with guide
- Photograph frozen waterfalls along Turnagain Arm
- Photograph snowy mountains at Glen Alps
- Capture sunset photography at the coast
The experience
You start at a seaplane base, one of the world's busiest, where the contrast between aircraft and frost makes for a strong opening shot. From there the route moves through Kincaid Park, where moose often appear in winter, and your guide watches for recent wildlife sightings to time stops where you have the best chance of a clear frame. The instruction is not a lecture: it happens as you shoot, with the guide helping you see light, composition and the moment to press the shutter.
Turnagain Arm in winter holds frozen waterfalls suspended mid-fall, and the upper Cook Inlet opens into landscapes that read differently in snow. The Glen Alps section of Chugach State Park sits high enough that the surrounding mountains fill the frame in a way lower elevations cannot match. Your guide knows which locations work best on which days and adjusts the route based on weather and what has been spotted recently.
The tour wraps with sunset photography at the coast, and you head back to your hotel with tripods, snacks, coffee or tea, and four hours of instruction woven into the drive. The guide speaks English and handles the natural-history narrative en route, so you stay focused on what you are framing.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years). Children under 12 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I bring my phone to photograph, or do I need a DSLR camera?
Either works. Tripods are provided for both smartphones and digital cameras, so you can shoot with whatever you have. The guide offers the same instruction regardless of your equipment.
What is the seaplane base like in winter, and why is it a good photo location?
The seaplane base in Anchorage is the busiest in the world, and in winter the frost and ice create a strong visual contrast between the aircraft and the natural landscape. That contrast is what makes it a strong opening shot for the tour.
Will I actually see moose on this tour?
Moose appear in Kincaid Park in winter, and your guide watches for recent sightings to time stops where you have the best chance of spotting them. There is no guarantee, but the guide knows where they have been seen and adjusts the route accordingly.
How much of the tour is driving versus actually photographing?
The tour visits four to five locations across Anchorage, Kincaid Park, Turnagain Arm and Chugach State Park, with stops at each one for photography and short walks. The driving connects the stops and includes natural-history commentary, so instruction happens both on the move and at each location.
What makes Chugach State Park a better place to photograph mountains than other spots?
The Glen Alps section of Chugach State Park sits at a higher elevation, which puts the surrounding snowy peaks directly in your frame rather than distant on the horizon. That elevation difference is what makes the mountain photography work there.
