Race through Anchorage's railroad history and green spaces on your phone.

This self-guided scavenger hunt takes you through Anchorage's city center using the Let's Roam app to navigate, answer trivia questions, and complete photo challenges at landmarks like the Anchorage Depot and Eisenhower Alaska Statehood Monument. You pick your role—Brainiac, Photographer, or Mapper—and the hunt lasts around two hours at your own pace, starting whenever you're ready. The app tracks your team's score on a live leaderboard, and all photos are saved digitally for you afterward.

The Experience

You arrive in Anchorage with a free afternoon or a few hours to kill, and this hunt turns the city center into a game board. Download the Let's Roam app before you start, load it with your booking confirmation, and you're ready to go whenever you choose—no guide, no fixed time, no waiting for a group to assemble. The app gives you the map, the riddles, the photo challenges, and the leaderboard all in one place.

The route winds through Anchorage's downtown, hitting the Anchorage Depot, the Eisenhower Alaska Statehood Monument, the Appellate Court, and other landmarks the app directs you to. At each stop, you answer trivia questions about the city's railroad history and Alaskan heritage, solve challenges, or snap a photo that matches what the app asks for. Each player on your team picks a role—Brainiac focuses on the riddles, Photographer handles the photo tasks, Mapper navigates—so everyone has something to do. The leaderboard updates live, so you can see how you're stacking up against other teams running the hunt the same day.

Two hours is the typical length, but you set the pace. If you want to linger at a landmark or grab coffee between stops, the app waits. Public transportation runs nearby if you need it, and the route is wheelchair accessible. Bring a fully charged phone or a power bank—the app is your only guide, so battery matters. Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothes are the only other gear you need.

  • individual role selection for each player (Brainiac, Photographer, or Mapper).

Top questions

Can I start the scavenger hunt whenever I want, or is there a set time?

You start whenever you're ready. This is a self-guided hunt, so there's no fixed departure time or group assembly—download the app, load your confirmation, and begin as soon as you arrive at your starting point in Anchorage.

What happens if my phone dies during the hunt?

The app is your map and your guide, so a dead phone stops the hunt. Bring a fully charged smartphone and consider a power bank if you're worried about battery life over the two-hour hunt.

Do I need to visit every landmark the app shows, or can I skip some?

The app guides you through the route at your own pace, so you control which stops you hit and how long you spend at each one. You can move faster or slower depending on your interest and energy.

What is the Anchorage Depot, and why is it part of the hunt?

The Anchorage Depot is a historic railroad landmark in the city center that reflects Anchorage's rich railroad heritage. The hunt uses it and other downtown buildings to tell the story of how the city developed.

Can I do this hunt alone, or do I need a team?

You can hunt solo or bring a team. If you bring others, each player picks a role—Brainiac, Photographer, or Mapper—so everyone has their own challenges. Solo hunters pick one role and handle all the tasks themselves.

Are there any costs beyond the ticket price for entry to landmarks or food?

The hunt itself is self-guided and doesn't require paid entry to attractions. Food and drinks are not included, so budget separately if you want to eat or drink during your two hours in the city.
