Acadia’s wild coast, forest trails, and quiet moments with seals

You’ll walk Acadia’s coastal trails with a small group, hear stories from your guide, watch for eagles and seals, and share a picnic lunch by Jordan Pond (don’t skip the popover). Expect salt air, laughter, and quiet moments that stay with you long after you’ve left Maine’s wild coast behind.

The Experience

The first thing I noticed stepping out near Bar Harbor was the salt in the air — not sharp, but soft, mixed with pine. Our small group kind of shuffled at first, everyone glancing around at each other and then at our guide, Sam. He had this Maine accent that made even the word “lobster” sound like part of the landscape. We started walking along the Ocean Path, waves thumping against rocks below. It wasn’t loud exactly — more like a steady background heartbeat. I caught myself slowing down just to listen.

Thunder Hole was next. Sam grinned before we got there and said to watch for the spray — he wasn’t kidding. A couple of us jumped when it hit (my socks were doomed from that point). The path was easy enough but not boring; sometimes you’d look up and see an eagle circling or someone would point out a deer half-hidden in the brush. I tried to snap a photo but mostly ended up with blurry branches. Oh well.

Lunch at Jordan Pond was honestly one of my favorite bits of this Acadia small group tour. We sat on these big rocks by the water, eating sandwiches and those famous popovers (I still don’t know what makes them so fluffy). There was this quiet moment where nobody talked — just wind moving through grass and the clink of someone’s thermos. Afterward we walked off lunch along Somes Sound, which looked silver in the afternoon light. Sam led us to this spot where seals sometimes haul out — we actually saw two bobbing heads pop up, just watching us as if we were the show.

I didn’t expect to feel so… settled? Something about being out there with strangers who slowly became less strange as we traded snacks or pointed out weird-shaped clouds over Acadia. By the end I almost forgot about my wet socks — almost.
