The experience

The whole 27 miles of the Park Loop Road fit into one morning or afternoon, which is the only way to see this much of Acadia without splitting the day. Your guide drives while you sit in a private vehicle, stopping when something catches your eye or when the itinerary calls for it. The route moves through the woods, along rocky shores and coves, over historic stone bridges, and up to the summit of Cadillac Mountain: the highest point on the eastern seaboard. What makes the timing matter: a 5 AM start gets you to the summit before sunrise, so you stand there as the first light hits the Atlantic. A 3 to 4 PM departure means you watch the sun drop into the ocean from the same spot.
