The experience

The tour picks you up at your Anchorage hotel and heads north toward Denali, stopping at scenic pull-outs along the way. In Talkeetna, a small artist community, you'll have lunch with your guide and get an overview of the five days ahead. By evening you're checked into a hotel in Denali Park Village, positioned at the edge of one of North America's largest protected wilderness areas.

Day two and day four are yours to shape. In Denali, you can choose whitewater rafting on the Nenana River, off-road ATV driving, a helicopter tour with a glacier landing, an airplane sightseeing flight, guided hiking, or fly-fishing: each at its own cost. Later, when you reach Seward on the Kenai Peninsula, the same freedom applies: a boat cruise through Kenai Fjords National Park to see tidewater glaciers and marine wildlife, sea kayaking, or an ocean fishing trip for salmon and rockfish. Your guide covers the driving days and the included meals. How you fill the choice days depends on what draws you.

The drive from Denali to Seward on day three is itself a tour: you'll pass the Chugach Mountains, the Knik and Turnagain Arms, stop at Byron Glacier for a short hike, and cross the Kenai Mountain Range before arriving at Seward, a seaside town on Resurrection Bay. The final morning includes a visit to the Sea Life Center, Alaska's only permanent marine mammal rehabilitation facility, before your guide drops you at your preferred location in Anchorage.

What wildlife might I see on the drives through Denali and the Kenai Peninsula?

Denali is home to grizzly bears, wolves, moose, caribou and Dall sheep. The drives include stops at scenic pull-outs where wildlife sightings are common. On the Kenai Peninsula and in Kenai Fjords National Park, you can see orcas, humpback whales, harbor seals, sea otters, Steller sea lions, bald eagles, mountain goats and puffins.

Do I have to book the activities on days two and four in advance, or can I decide when I arrive?

You choose your activities when you're there. On day two in Denali, you can pick from whitewater rafting, ATV tours, helicopter tours, airplane sightseeing, guided hiking or fly-fishing. On day four in Seward, options include a Kenai Fjords boat cruise, sea kayaking, or ocean fishing. Each activity costs extra and is arranged locally.

What's included in the tour cost and what do I pay separately?

Park entrance fees, all transportation, lunch and your guide are included. You pay separately for any activities you choose on days two and four, airfare to and from Anchorage, and gratuity for your guide (10–15% of the tour price is recommended).

Where will I stay each night?

Night one and two are in Denali Park Village near Denali National Park. Nights three and four are at the Edgewater Hotel in Seward on Resurrection Bay, the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park.

How much driving is involved, and what's the scenery like?

Day one is the longest drive, heading north to Denali with stops along the way. Day three is a full scenic drive south to Seward, passing the Chugach Mountains, the Knik and Turnagain Arms, and the Kenai Mountain Range. Days two and four are based in one place, and day five is the return drive to Anchorage. Your guide stops at pull-outs for wildlife and views throughout.
