The Experience

The elevator climbs 1,000 feet in 40 seconds — one of the fastest in North America — and you're standing on the 94th floor of 875 N. Michigan Ave before your ears finish adjusting. The windows wrap around, and suddenly Lake Michigan spreads out below like something from a different planet. On a clear day you can see four states from up here. The observation deck sits in the heart of downtown, steps from Michigan Avenue's other attractions, so it slots easily into an afternoon without eating up your whole schedule.

Your Sip and View ticket gets you past the line and straight into the security checkpoint, then up to CloudBar, where you order one drink from their rotating menu — beer, wine, or cocktails, all Chicago-themed. The bar sits right at the windows. You're holding a drink and looking down at the city's architecture, the grid of streets, the curve of the lake. There's a documentary called "3 of 77" that plays on the concourse level, a short piece about Chicago neighborhoods that gives you context for what you're seeing. It's not required viewing, but it helps the skyline make sense.

The CloudWalk is the thing people photograph — a 3D mural by artist Nate Baranowski that covers the ground and windows with an optical illusion designed to make you feel like you're stepping into the clouds. It's a bit much, but it works. The concourse has been recently remodeled, so the whole experience feels current, not dated. If you want more adrenaline, TILT is available as an add-on once you're up there — a thrill ride that tips you forward and gives you downward-facing views from the same height, though it costs extra and isn't part of your ticket.

The MagniCity app loads before you go and gives you a guide to what you're looking at — neighborhoods, landmarks, distances. Wheelchair access runs through the whole building, and public transit stops nearby if you're not driving. Weather and visibility matter here; if the day is too cloudy or hazy, 360 Chicago will reschedule your ticket for up to a year out rather than refund it, so pick a clear forecast if you can.
