You'll identify plants yourself using a naturalist app, not just listen to a guide name them.

A 3-hour guided nature walk across 42 acres of restored forest, wetlands, and grasslands in Centerville, Tennessee combines hands-on plant identification using iNaturalist with quiet solo exploration and a curated tea tasting. Small groups stay under a dozen. An expert educator leads the forest section, then you choose your tea from wild-crafted seasonal botanicals, aged Pu'Erh, or premium Japanese Gyokuro. Minimum age is 18.

The experience

The sanctuary sits 90 minutes west of Nashville across rolling terrain that has been actively restored: native plants and wildflowers have resurged, and the creeks and grasslands now support returning wildlife. You'll spend the first hour with a guide learning to identify plants using iNaturalist, the crowdsourced app that turns plant spotting into a skill you can use anywhere. The guide is an expert educator who knows the restoration work happening on the land itself, not just the species names.

After the guided identification hour, you move into self-guided quiet discovery across the grounds. This is not a lecture walk. It is time to move through the forest and wetlands at your own pace, using what you just learned or simply sitting with the restored ecosystem. The sanctuary's 42 acres give you room to wander without feeling rushed or crowded. Groups stay small, which means you are not navigating around dozens of other visitors.

The experience ends with a 30-minute tea ritual where you choose your brew (wild-crafted seasonal botanicals foraged from the region, a rare aged Pu'Erh, or premium Japanese Gyokuro green tea), and sit with it in a curated setting. Coffee is also available if tea is not your preference. This is not a quick beverage stop. It is a deliberate close to the three hours, a moment to settle after the walk.

Is this one for you?The small-group format with a guided plant ID hour followed by solo exploration suits anyone who wants to learn a skill they can use again, not just hear facts during a walk. If you prefer continuous narration or a fully led experience, a traditional guided nature tour would fit better.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What exactly do I learn to identify on the plant walk?

The guide teaches you to use iNaturalist, an app that helps you recognize and log native plants growing across the sanctuary. You are learning the skill of plant identification itself, not memorizing a list the guide provides. You'll be able to use the app on other walks after this one.

How much of the three hours is guided versus on my own?

One hour is spent with the guide learning plant identification using iNaturalist. The remaining time is split between self-guided quiet exploration across the 42 acres and the tea ritual at the end, so you have freedom to move at your own pace through the restored forest and wetlands.

What kind of tea choices do I get?

You choose from wild-crafted seasonal botanicals foraged from the region, a rare aged Pu'Erh, or premium Japanese Gyokuro green tea. Coffee is also available, and the tea ritual lasts about 30 minutes as a calm close to the walk.

Is this sanctuary actually restored, or does it just look natural?

Bask Nature Sanctuary is a 42-acre non-profit actively restoring the land through reforestation and native plant cultivation. Native plants, wildflowers, and wildlife have resurged across the forests, wetlands, and grasslands as the restoration work continues. The guide can speak to what has changed and what is still growing back.

How far is this from Nashville?

Centerville is about 90 minutes west of Nashville, so the drive is roughly an hour and a half each way if you are traveling from the city. You will need your own transportation to reach the sanctuary.
