The experience

Your instructor arrives at the beach with wetsuits and surfboards in hand. You'll start on the sand learning basic footwork and positioning before entering the water, so you understand the mechanics before you're in the waves. The instructor stays beside you the entire time: helping you paddle out, timing your wave catches, and refining your technique as you go. Because the lesson is private or capped at a small group, you get individualized coaching rather than being one of many in a lineup.

The lesson covers surfing safety, etiquette, how to read tides and ocean conditions, and the fundamentals of catching and riding waves. Wavehuggers, the school running the lesson, frames surfing instruction around ocean conservation, so you'll also learn about protecting the waves and marine environment you're enjoying. The 2-hour window gives you enough time to move past the initial learning curve and actually feel what it's like to ride a wave.

What’s included

  • Wetsuit and surfboard.
  • bottled water.
  • 2-hour instruction from a CPR-certified, English-speaking instructor who tailors the lesson to your ability level.
