The Experience

The wooden dock at Marriott's Frenchman's Cove sits quiet until the crew starts loading passengers onto The VI Cat, a catamaran built for exactly this: watching the light change over the water while holding a drink. You arrive 30 minutes early, check in with the crew on the dock, and then you are aboard. The boat leaves Charlotte Amalie Harbor and heads out, and for the next two hours the sun does what it does best in the Caribbean — it turns the sky orange and pink and gold, and the whole thing feels less like a tour and more like you stumbled into someone's evening.

The open bar runs the whole time. Cocktails, wine, beer, non-alcoholic drinks — whatever you want, it is there. The food comes out in waves: vegetable and fruit platters, pita with hummus, a meat and cheese spread, chips with mango salsa, smoked mahi dip, orzo salad. Nothing fancy, but it is enough that you are not hungry and you are not bored between sips. The crew knows the harbor, knows the light, and knows when to point out where you are. If you are coming from a cruise ship, it is a 7 to 10 minute taxi from WICO or 20 to 30 minutes from Crown Bay. The whole thing is listed in Atlantic Standard Time, so check your watch. Cancellation is free up to 72 hours before, but after that you lose the money. If weather shuts it down, they refund you or rebook you.
