The experience

The tour starts at the arrival street where goods and weapons once landed, then moves through Plaza Mayor: the political and commercial heart where artisans worked and livestock crossed through on their way to market. You'll see the Monastery and Viceroy's house from the central platform, then walk south to the Mast with the national flag, where you stand at the country's southernmost point and look across the bay toward the bastions of San Miguel and Santa Rita.

St. John's Bastion, built in 1680 from stones quarried off the coast, served as both a military refuge and a field hospital. The guide walks you through the entrance, bell towers, and main altar. The Governor's house and military settlement come next, with descriptions of the stables, watchtower, and how carriages moved through. The tour ends at the lighthouse, built in 1753 behind the ruins of the Monastery of San Francisco Xavier. It combines with Farallon Island's light to mark the navigable channel for ships entering the bay.

The walled city's handmade roofs, lanterns, and stone streets with natural drains remain largely unchanged since the Portuguese and Spanish occupation. You'll walk on the same surfaces and past the same military field gate and drawbridge that defined the settlement four centuries ago.
