The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous stepping barefoot onto the deck at Dubai Harbour — not sure why, maybe just the whole idea of having a 50-foot yacht to ourselves felt surreal. The crew greeted us with these easy smiles (one of them handed me cold water right away, which I didn’t realize I needed until that second). The city felt different from the water — quieter somehow. We slipped out past the marina’s skyscrapers and suddenly there was nothing but open blue and the hum of the engine beneath my feet.

Our captain — he introduced himself as Ahmed — pointed out Palm Jumeirah first. You see it on postcards all the time but gliding along its edge is another thing entirely. There’s this salty tang in the air and you get these flashes of gold from the sun bouncing off hotel windows. When we got close to Burj Al Arab, Ahmed slowed down so we could take it in. It really does look like a sail rising out of nowhere. My friend tried to get a selfie with it in the background and almost dropped her phone overboard (she still laughs about that).

The route took us past JBR’s long stretch of white sand — families waving from jet skis, someone blasting music in the distance — then around to Ain Dubai on Bluewaters Island. That Ferris wheel looks even taller when you’re floating right under it. There was this moment where everything went quiet except for gulls overhead and I just leaned back on one of those sunbeds thinking: wow, this is actually happening. We had unlimited bottled water (and yes, plenty of ice), which sounds minor but trust me, Dubai heat is no joke.

We looped back after two hours that honestly felt shorter than they should’ve been. The city lights were starting to flicker on as we docked again — kind of made me wish we’d booked an evening cruise too.
