The Experience

The air was still cool when our guide pulled up outside the hotel—right on time, which honestly surprised me for a city that rarely sleeps. The drive out of Dubai was quick; within half an hour, the skyline faded into open desert. You can actually smell the sand here—sort of dry and earthy, not what I expected. We stopped at a small camp where rows of quad bikes were already lined up, engines humming softly. After a quick safety chat (helmets on, rules clear), I hopped on my bike and followed our guide across the dunes. The red sand kicked up behind us as we zigzagged over bumps and dips—my hands were shaking a bit from excitement or nerves, maybe both.

Next came dune bashing in a 4x4. Our driver—Ali—knew every trick; he’d been doing this for years and you could tell by how he handled those steep drops. At one point we paused at the top of a high dune for photos—the sun made everything look almost orange. There was this quiet except for the wind and someone’s laughter drifting over from another group. Later, we tried sandboarding (I fell twice but it was worth it) and then met a camel named Lulu for a short ride. She smelled faintly of hay and something sweet I couldn’t place. Before heading back, we took turns holding a falcon for pictures—its feathers felt softer than I thought they’d be. On the way out, we passed by a camel farm; you could hear them grumbling to each other if you listened close.
