The Experience

Someone hands me a tiny paper cup of sweet, cardamom-scented tea just as the sky starts to shift—pink first, then gold. Our driver, Ahmed, laughs when I nearly spill it climbing out of the 4x4 (I blame the sand). The city feels far behind already. There’s this hush out here in the Dubai desert at dawn—just wind brushing over the dunes and the low hum of someone’s voice nearby, maybe telling a joke I can’t quite catch.

We climb up one of the taller dunes—harder than it looks, honestly—and Ahmed points to where the sun will break. It comes up fast. Suddenly everything is sharp: cool air on my face, gritty sand under my shoes, that warm light sliding across endless ripples. My friend tries sandboarding and wipes out immediately; she’s still brushing sand out of her hair hours later. I watch a line of camels move along the ridge in silhouette—one of those moments you try to photograph but it never looks as good as it feels right then.

The camel ride is slower than I expected, almost meditative if you don’t mind swaying side to side (I did for a minute, then just gave in). There’s time for photos—Ahmed insists on taking some “proper ones” for us—and we share more tea with a couple from Sharjah who’ve done this before but say sunrise is always different. The drive back is quiet; everyone’s a bit sandy and sleepy and smiling. I keep thinking about that first breath of cold desert air when we stepped out—can’t really explain why it sticks with me.
