The Experience
We rolled out of Dubai just as the city haze faded behind us, our guide Saeed humming along to something on the radio I didn’t recognize. The highway felt endless but then—suddenly—the buildings dropped away and it was just flat land and a kind of reddish gold everywhere. I kept looking out for camels (none yet), but Saeed pointed out the way the sand changes color depending on the light. He said if you catch it right at sunset, it almost glows pink. We weren’t that late, but still—pretty wild how quiet it got once we left the main road.
The dune drive part was… well, more intense than I expected. Saeed grinned in the rearview mirror before hitting this big dip—I think he enjoys scaring tourists a little. The car tilted and my stomach did that rollercoaster thing. My friend tried to film but just ended up laughing when her phone slipped under the seat. After a while we stopped at this spot where the sand looked untouched except for our tracks. There was wind, but not too much—just enough to hear it moving over the dunes if you listened close.
I tried sandboarding next (not gracefully). The board slid fast and I landed pretty much face-first, which got a thumbs-up from a kid in another group nearby. Then came camel riding—honestly, they’re taller than they look in photos. The handler let me pet one; its fur was rougher than I thought and it smelled like hay and sun-warmed leather. Someone handed around cold sodas and we all sat for a minute catching our breath, shoes full of sand. It’s funny how quickly you forget about city noise out here.
