The Experience

I was still laughing about my attempt to pronounce “Etihad” when we pulled up to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: honestly, it’s hard to describe that first moment. The marble almost glowed in the morning haze. Our guide, Yasir, handed out scarves for those who needed them and told us little things: like how the carpets were woven by hand in Iran. I caught a faint whiff of rosewater as we stepped inside. There was this hush, but also kids giggling somewhere behind us. I didn’t expect to feel so small standing under those domes.
