The Experience

“You see that?” our guide, Oksana, pointed up at the golden domes of St. Michael’s just as the bells started ringing — not loud, but enough to make me pause mid-sentence. I’d never heard church bells echo like that before, kind of soft and sharp at the same time. We’d only just started our Kyiv one day tour and already I was fumbling for my camera, but honestly, it didn’t capture the blue against the sky or how people stopped to cross themselves as they walked by. Oksana smiled — she said locals still do that out of habit, even if they’re late for work.

We zigzagged through Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square), where there were more pigeons than I expected and a few teenagers practicing skateboard tricks near the fountains. Oksana told us about the protests here — her voice dropped a bit when she talked about 2014. It felt strange standing somewhere you’ve seen on TV, but then someone handed me a coffee from a street cart (it was strong and slightly burnt, but warming) and suddenly it was just another busy city morning. The walk up Andriyivsky descent nearly did me in — those cobblestones are no joke — but St. Andrew’s Church at the top looked like something out of a fairy tale, all green curls and gold details.

I kept thinking we’d run out of big sights, but then there was St. Sophia Cathedral (the mosaics inside are so old you can almost smell the centuries) and later the Lavra caves, which honestly made me nervous — it’s dark down there and you have to shuffle past flickering candles while people whisper prayers in Ukrainian. Oksana waited outside; she said she gets goosebumps every time too. By afternoon my feet were sore but I didn’t really care anymore — we’d seen so much in six hours that I forgot to check my phone until we were back on Khreshchatyk with its noisy traffic and bright shop windows.
