The experience

You meet at 07:30 in Kiev for a two-hour drive to the main checkpoint of the Exclusion Zone, with a brief stop for coffee or a sandwich. After passport and police control, the tour enters the power plant territory to see Reactors 1, 2, 3 and 4, the new Sarcophagus covering Reactor 4, the radioactive fuel storage facility, Reactor 5 and the cooling tower. The guide walks you through each site and explains what you're standing in front of: the scale and the engineering, the containment measures built after 1986.

Pripyat, the city built for power plant workers, takes up the middle of the day. You walk roughly two hours through empty streets past School No. 1 (partially collapsed), the hospital, the river port, the Prometheus Cinema, the football stadium, the swimming pool and the famous Ferris wheel that never ran after the evacuation. Hotel Polissya, where Soviet physicists stayed during the initial response, still stands. Lunch happens in a canteen near the power plant around 13:30. After eating, the tour moves to Chernobyl-2, a military base built around the Duga-1 radar antenna: a structure 150 meters tall and 1 kilometer long, designed to detect incoming ballistic missiles and nicknamed the "Russian Woodpecker" for the tapping noise it broadcast across radio frequencies. The final stop is Chernobyl Town, the administrative center of the Zone, where you see the Third Angel memorial complex, a map of the Exclusion Zone and nameplates of all the abandoned villages. You pass through radiation control on the way out and arrive back in Kiev around 18:00 to 19:00.

The tour includes all permits for the 30-kilometer zone, the 10-kilometer zone and Pripyat, plus permission to photograph and film throughout. Transport is shared and air-conditioned. Your guide speaks English and travels with the group the entire day. A vegetarian meal option is available if you request it when booking.
