The Experience

The tour starts in uptown Kampala, moving through landmarks that frame the city's modern and colonial past: the Independence Monument, Mutesa II Monument, World War II Monument, the Parliamentary Building and the Uganda National Cultural Centre (established 1959). You'll pass the Bank of Uganda, established 1966, and stop at Nakasero Market, which has occupied its current city-centre location since 1905. Along the way, the route passes Hindu temples including Shree Swaminarayan Mandir and other culturally significant sites that mark Kampala's religious and ethnic layers.

From the city centre, the tour moves to the Buganda Kingdom sites. At Kabaka's Palace you'll explore the Idi Amin Armoury, view historical machine guns and palace photographs while learning about Buganda's royal history. The route continues past Kabaka's Lake and the Nantawetwa Monument—a site that opens only when the King travels from the palace to Buganda Parliament—then follows the Royal Mile, sightseeing Bulange (Buganda Parliament), the Kabaka's Monument, Zakaria Kisingiri House and the Buganda Clan Symbols. Next is the Gadhafi Mosque, where you climb the minaret for a 360-degree view of Kampala's famous seven hills, taking in Fort Lugard (established 1800) and Old Kampala Senior Secondary School, where Rwanda's President Kagame once studied.

The Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are the burial ground for the last four Kabakas of Buganda and remain a centre for the royal family, where traditional rituals and cultural practices are still observed. From there, the route passes through Makerere University, Uganda's oldest academic institution (established 1922) and Africa's third oldest university, with stops at the Old University Library (1949), the Main Administration Building (1941) and the Education Monument. On the way to the Baha'i Temple on Kikaya Hill, you'll pass Kalerwe Market, Kampala's second-largest local market. The temple, closed Mondays, sits in lush gardens. The tour concludes at the Uganda Museum, East Africa's first and oldest museum (established 1908), where you can explore displays of Uganda's history and culture before being dropped at your hotel.
