The experience

The walk starts at Jinja's central market, where you move through stalls of local food, fruits, vegetables, spices and metalwork, stopping to talk with vendors and take pictures. From there the guide takes you to the Uganda Railway Museum to see the remains of trains and track, explaining how the British and Indians shaped the city's growth as Uganda's industrial hub in the 20th century. The port and railway station come next: a functioning site where ferries and trains still operate, and where you can photograph the infrastructure the British built to export raw materials from East Africa to the Indian coast.

A visit to the craft village gives you time to browse souvenirs, then the tour moves to the nature side of Jinja with an optional boat ride on the Nile and Lake Victoria, where you can photograph the source of the Nile and watch bird species along the riverbank. The final stop is the Busoga cultural research center, followed by Madhvani House (the first flat built in Jinja) and Jinja City Hall, the administrative building. These last three sites anchor the regional and national history the guide explains throughout the day.
