The experience
Ssezibwa Falls opens the day: two streams split before dropping 17 meters down rocky cliffs into a pool below. The site is home to over 200 bird species and red-tailed monkeys. An optional stop at Namawojjolo market follows, where roasted chicken and nyama choma (grilled meat) are the draw. The roasted plantain and street food here are built into the itinerary for travelers who want to eat as locals do.
Mabira Forest takes up the middle hours. At 306 square kilometers, it is one of East Africa's largest surviving tropical rainforests, with three established trail networks where you walk under the forest canopy. The forest holds 312 tree species (some found nowhere else), 316 bird species, 219 butterfly species, and small mammals including the Uganda Mangabey, a primate unique to Uganda. The trails are designed for nature walks at an easy pace. The guide leads and points out wildlife and plant life as you move through.
The Jinja Nile Bridge, a cable-stayed crossing of the Victoria Nile, marks the approach to the source itself. At the source, gardens surround the site, and craft shops sell African pieces from across the country. Monuments mark historical moments: Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were scattered here, and a stone marks the spot where British explorer John Hanning Speke first beheld the Nile. Lunch and a traditional Ugandan meal close the day before the return drive to your hotel.
