The experience
The day starts before dawn with pickup from your accommodation in Kisoro or Kabale, a packed breakfast and water in hand. You arrive at Mgahinga's headquarters for a ranger briefing that covers gorilla behavior, safety rules, conservation efforts and the history of the park: information that shapes how you move and what you watch for once the trek begins. Mgahinga sits inside the Virunga Conservation Area, which spans Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, making it part of a larger protected landscape for these gorillas.
The trek itself has no fixed duration: depending on where the Nyakagezi family has moved, you might walk 2 hours or 6. The terrain is steep and the forest dense, which is why the park recommends at least moderate fitness and a minimum age of 15. Once you locate the gorillas, you stop and observe for up to one hour. The only time you are allowed to stay with them. Your guide explains their social structure and behavior as you watch. After the trek ends, you transfer back to your accommodation.
Private transportation and lunch are included. The trek is demanding: it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, or those with poor cardiovascular health. Bring sturdy hiking boots, rain gear and layers, as the forest is wet and cool even when the lowlands are warm.
