The experience

The trek starts after breakfast with a boda boda ride to the Bushiyi trail gate, where you meet your guide, porter and chef and register into Mount Elgon National Park. From there the route climbs to Shiloko Camp at 2,600 meters, your base for the first night. Day two pushes higher through steep, dense forest to Dubi Camp at 3,600 meters, where you rest and eat before the summit attempt. On day three you traverse the heather zone in the early morning, cross the panoramic ridge and reach Wagagai Peak, where you can see the other major peaks of Mount Elgon (Masaba, Koitobos and Sudek) before descending back to Shiloko Camp. The final morning brings you down to the gate to sign out and collect your certificate.

The trek passes through distinct ecosystems: primary and secondary forests thick with white and black colobus monkeys, birds and reptiles in the lower sections, then bamboo forest, then the open heather zone near the summit. Wildlife sightings are frequent but unhurried. The slow pace means you stop to watch rather than rush past. Your chef cooks breakfast, lunch and dinner at each camp, and your porter carries the bulk of the load so you can focus on the climb. Tent, sleeping bag and mat are provided. You bring your own clothes and gear.

This route is the most popular on Mount Elgon because it balances summit access with time to rest and acclimatize. The four-day structure means you are not racing to the peak and back in a single push, and the descent on day three gives you a full day to recover before leaving the mountain on day four.

Is this one for you? This trek suits small groups or solo hikers who want to summit Mount Elgon without the rush of a two-day push, and who value time to rest between camps and absorb the changing forest and alpine zones. The four-day span is what makes the unhurried pace possible. You climb and descend at a rate that lets your body adjust to altitude rather than race against the clock.

Top questions

What is Wagagai Peak and how high is it?

Wagagai Peak is the highest point on Mount Elgon at 4,321 meters. You reach it on the morning of day three after trekking through the heather zone, and the summit offers views across to the other major peaks of the mountain before you descend back to camp.

What wildlife might I see on the Bushiyi Trail?

White and black colobus monkeys are common in the forest sections, and you will encounter a variety of birds, reptiles and insects throughout the trek. The slow pace of the hike means you have time to watch and photograph rather than pass quickly through.

Do I need to arrange my own food and water?

No. Your chef prepares breakfast, lunch and dinner at each camp, and drinking water is provided. You do not need to carry food, though you may bring snacks if you prefer.

What happens on the final day?

Day four is a descent from Shiloko Camp back down to the Bushiyi trail gate, where you sign out of the park and receive your summit certificate. From there you head to your next destination.

Is accommodation included before and after the hike?

Accommodation before and after the trek is available as an add-on option at checkout. The trek itself includes only the four nights of camping on the mountain.

What level of fitness do I need?

You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The trek is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or pregnancy, as the altitude gain and uneven terrain present real physical demands.
