The Experience
They picked us up right on Grace Bay Beach, just a few steps from where we’d been half-dozing under an umbrella. The boat glided in, crew waving — I think one of them was Marvin himself, but I never actually asked (should’ve). There was this salty breeze that made my shirt stick to my back, and I remember squinting at the sun while they helped us into harnesses. The life jackets felt snug but not uncomfortable — honestly, I was more nervous about my sunglasses than anything else.
Our guide gave a quick safety talk — nothing stiff or formal, just pointing out what to hold and when to sit. He grinned when I asked if anyone ever chickens out last minute (“sometimes!”), then checked our straps again before giving the signal. Suddenly we were floating up, slow at first, then way higher than I’d pictured. You know that weird silence you get above water? It’s real. Just wind and the distant sound of music drifting from the beach bars below. From 500 feet up you see both sides of Turks & Caicos at once — the water is so clear it almost looks fake, and you can spot little dark shapes moving below (stingrays maybe?).
I tried to wave at people on shore but honestly couldn’t tell if they saw me or not — everything looked tiny from up there. My friend kept laughing every time the wind swung us a bit; I think she forgot her fear of heights after about thirty seconds. Coming down felt too quick, like waking up from a good nap. The crew caught us with practiced hands and cracked a joke about our hair sticking up (“parasail hairstyle,” apparently). Still thinking about that view days later.
