The experience
Saruhan Caravanserai sits 13 kilometers from Goreme, and the evening starts with a 20-minute drive from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle. The building itself dates to the 13th century and is one of Anatolia's best-preserved caravanserais. You arrive at the Dervish House inside it, where the ceremony begins at 6 p.m.
The ritual unfolds as the dervishes open their arms to both sides (right palm turned to the sky, left to the earth) a gesture meant to receive from God and give to the people. The Ney, a reed flute, and other live instruments accompany the turning. This is not a staged show for tourists. The dervishes are real practitioners and the musicians perform live. For the last 15 minutes of the ceremony, you're allowed to take photographs or video. After it ends, you'll taste complimentary Şerbet, a traditional syrup, before the drive back to your hotel.
