Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Pergamon ancient sites and lunch
- Visit Pergamon Acropolis
- Explore Asclepion sanctuary
- See the Red Courtyard temple
- Visit Bergama archaeological museum
- Lunch at local restaurant
The experience
What separates this from the standard bus-tour version is the licensed guide who knows both the archaeology and the access. You move at your own rhythm instead of the group's clock, and you can ask the questions that matter to you. The day starts between 8 and 10 am and runs until 7 or 8 pm, so you cover ground without rushing. Transportation by air-conditioned van means you're not standing in the heat between stops, and the driver navigates the roads while your guide talks.
The Acropolis holds the Zeus Altar, the marble-covered religious monument the Attalos Dynasty built and that now sits in Berlin's Pergamon Museum. You'll see the excavation site and the scale of what was moved. The Asclepion sanctuary spreads across an open courtyard with stoas, a library, a theatre, and the tunnel where ancient patients underwent water-sound therapy for psychological ailments. The snake symbol on the marble column at the entrance is the origin of the pharmacy symbol you see today. The Red Courtyard, the largest ancient structure in Bergama, started as a temple to the Egyptian god Serapis, then became one of the Seven Churches of Revelation dedicated to the Apostle John: the reconstructed Egyptian statue outside shows the detail of pharaonic dress even without its head.
Lunch happens at a local restaurant where you taste kebabs, mezzes, meatballs and a sweet like baklava or hosmelim. The guide's knowledge of the sites means you're not reading plaques. You're hearing the history of how these places worked and why they mattered, and you can steer the conversation toward what interests you most.

Is this one for you?A private tour suits travelers who want to ask questions and steer the conversation toward what matters to them, rather than follow a fixed script with a larger group. The licensed guide's knowledge and the flexible pace mean you spend time on the sites that interest you most, and the small group size (minimum two) keeps the day intimate and the van manageable.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 7 years); Infant (under 4): free.
What's actually inside the Pergamum Acropolis that I'll see?
The Acropolis contains the sacred areas of the ancient Bergama state, including the Zeus Altar (the monumental religious building from the Attalos Dynasty), the theatre, temples to Athena, Trajan and Hadrian, the city settlement area, the Demeter sanctuary, gymnasiums and both upper and lower agora. The Zeus Altar's marble-covered frescoes were excavated in the 1870s and moved to the Berlin Pergamon Museum, so you'll see the archaeological site itself.
How does the Asclepion sanctuary work as a healing site?
The Asclepion is an open courtyard surrounded by stoas and buildings including a library, promenade, theatre, water and mud baths, and a sleeping room connected by a tunnel. Patients with psychological problems were treated using water-sound therapy in the tunnels and dream analysis with suggestion methods: the snake symbol on the marble column at the entrance is now the universal symbol of pharmacy.
Why is the Red Courtyard called the Temple of the Egyptian Gods?
The Red Courtyard was originally dedicated to Serapis, the Egyptian religious god, and his dependents Isis and Harporakes. It was later rededicated to the Apostle John and became one of the Seven Churches of Revelation. A reconstructed Egyptian statue stands outside showing the pharaonic headrest style, and the actual remains are preserved nearby.
What's included in the tour price and what do I pay separately?
The tour includes the English-speaking guide, transportation by air-conditioned van and parking fees. Entrance fees to the Acropolis, Asclepion and Red Courtyard are 20 euros per person and paid separately. The cable car is also separate. Lunch at a local restaurant is a built-in stop, and beverages and personal items are your own cost.
When does the tour start and end, and how long does it actually run?
Pickup happens between 8 and 10 am, and the tour finishes between 7 and 8 pm, so you're looking at roughly eight hours total. The flexible start window lets you coordinate with your hotel or accommodation schedule.
