Six hours across white travertine terraces, an ancient necropolis, and a thermal pool filled with marble fragments

A six-hour guided tour from Pamukkale or Karahayit hotels takes you through Hierapolis (one of Anatolia's largest ancient cemeteries with 1,200 graves, the Roman Bath, and the Main Street), then down to the gleaming white travertine terraces of Pamukkale itself, and into Cleopatra Pool, where you swim among underwater fragments of Roman columns. Hotel pickup, lunch at a local restaurant, and an English-speaking guide are included. Entrance to Cleopatra Pool is separate.

The experience

The tour starts at your hotel and moves through Hierapolis, the ancient city that once crowned the plateau above Pamukkale. Your guide walks you past the Necropolis cemetery (one of the largest in Anatolia with 1,200 graves) the Roman Bath, the Domitian Gate, and the Main Street, then through the Byzantium Gate. The ruins sit directly above the white terraces, so the two sites are part of one continuous experience rather than separate stops.

From there you descend to the travertine terraces themselves. The white calcium carbonate layers built up in steps across the plateau are the result of warm water flowing down the slopes and losing carbon dioxide as it falls, leaving limestone deposits behind. The water temperature runs about 35 degrees Celsius. You walk across these gleaming white steps and into the natural warm water pools that give Pamukkale its name: Cotton Castle in Turkish.

Cleopatra Pool is the final stop: a thermal pool warmed by hot springs and scattered with underwater fragments of ancient marble columns, possibly from the Temple of Apollo. During the Roman period, columned porticoes surrounded the pool. Earthquakes toppled them into the water where they remain today. You get to swim among these antiquities. After the pool, the tour takes you to the Red Hot Springs in Karahayit for free time to enjoy the water before returning to your hotel. Lunch at a local restaurant and your guide's commentary on the history and geology of both sites are built into the day.

What exactly is Cleopatra Pool and why are there Roman columns underwater?

Cleopatra Pool is a thermal pool fed by hot springs at Pamukkale, warmed to about 35 degrees Celsius.
