The Experience

You're picked up from your hotel around 6am and driven inland through the Taurus Mountains, passing Salda Lake on the way. The route itself is the first part of the day — three hours through the landscape of southwestern Turkey before you stop for breakfast. By noon you arrive at Pamukkale, the white terraces that give the village its name (it means "Cotton Castle" in Turkish). The travertine pools are fed by hot springs carrying dissolved calcium bicarbonate from the Cal Dagi Mountains, and the mineral-saturated water has left behind the dazzling white slopes that make the site one of Turkey's most-visited attractions.

The thermal pools sit above the archaeological zone of Hierapolis, the ancient city that once drew visitors for the same reason it draws you — the healing waters. You can bathe in the modern spa facility built around the hot springs, swimming in water that has flowed from the same source for millennia. After the pools, the tour moves to Hierapolis itself, where you walk among the Temple of Apollo, a restored 2nd-century Roman theater with elaborate carved reliefs still intact, the colonnades of the ancient main street, and the elaborate tomb of Flavius Zeuxis. The necropolis here is the largest in Asia Minor, and the scale of it — graves and monuments stretching across the hillside — gives a sense of how important this place was.

Lunch is a one-hour break at a local restaurant with an open buffet. On the return drive to Antalya (about four hours), there's a stop at a carpet loom workshop where you can watch the Turkish weaving craft and buy if you want to. The tour also includes a stop at an onyx workshop on the way in. These are working demonstrations, not museums — you see how the pieces are made and have the chance to purchase, but nothing is obligatory. You're back in Antalya in the late afternoon.
