The experience
The day starts at 3 a.m. from your hotel in Side, with a breakfast break an hour into the drive. After four hours crossing the Taurus Mountains and passing Salda Lake, you arrive at Pamukkale around noon. The name means Cotton Castle in Turkish, and the reason becomes clear: the hillside is covered in white travertine terraces built up over millennia by mineral-rich thermal water flowing down from above. You have time to walk the terraces, then move to Hierapolis, the ancient city that sits on top of them. The necropolis there is enormous, with graves and ruins spread across the site. This is where the thermal waters drew visitors for thousands of years, including Cleopatra, who came for the beauty and the healing properties of the springs.
The tour includes two stops at local workshops where you can watch craftspeople at work and buy souvenirs if you want to. Lunch is an open buffet at a restaurant near the site, with about an hour to eat. If you add Cleopatra's Pool to your booking, you get access to the professionally run spa facility fed by the same hot springs. The one place where you can actually swim in the thermal water. The return journey to Antalya takes five hours, with a final shopping break before you arrive back in Side.
A live guide in English or Russian travels with the group and provides commentary throughout the day. The bus has full air conditioning. The long hours and early start suit travelers who want to pack both nature and history into one outing without arranging their own transport or navigating between sites.
