The Experience
We squeezed into this little workshop just off a busy street in Istanbul — I could still smell the simit carts outside. Inside, it was all soft light and shelves stacked with glass bits, more colors than I knew existed. Our guide, Emre, handed me a chipped blue tile and grinned like he’d seen a hundred nervous beginners before. “No rules,” he said. “Just make something you’ll want to take home.” I laughed because my hands were already sticky from the glue, but honestly, it felt good not to worry about messing up.
There were people from everywhere at our table — a couple from Izmir, two sisters from Germany, a kid who kept dropping beads (his mom didn’t even flinch). Emre wandered around pouring sweet Turkish tea into tiny glasses, telling us how these mosaic lamps started out centuries ago in Ottoman palaces. He pointed at one design and told us the name in Turkish — I tried repeating it and he just shook his head, laughing. The way the afternoon sun hit the colored glass made everything feel warmer somehow.
Istanbul’s mosaic lamp workshop wasn’t what I expected — I thought we’d just glue stuff together and leave. But there’s something about working with your hands while hearing stories from locals that sticks with you longer than any souvenir shop ever could. When I finally finished my lamp (a little crooked), Emre said it was “full of character.” I still think about that glow when I turn it on at home.
