The experience
We met our guide, Ece, just outside the big gates of Topkapi Palace. She had this way of waving us over like we were old friends. The palace itself is all stone and sunlight, but it’s the little things that stick: the coolness under your feet when you step inside, or how the air smells faintly of polished wood and something sweet I still can’t name. Ece pointed out a spot in one courtyard where sultans used to watch parades. I tried to picture it, but honestly my mind wandered to the cats lounging everywhere. Istanbul cats are a whole thing.
The Harem was next. I’d read about it before, but standing in those narrow corridors felt different: kind of hushed, like everyone’s still keeping secrets even now. There was this tilework in blue and green that almost glowed in the dim light. Ece told us about palace life, how families lived here for generations. At one point she laughed and said even locals get lost in these rooms sometimes. I believed her. I nearly took a wrong turn myself.
After all that sunlight, heading down into the Basilica Cistern was like slipping underwater. It’s cooler down there, and quiet except for water dripping somewhere out of sight. The columns go on forever: some carved with strange faces, others just worn smooth by time. We found the Medusa heads tucked away in a corner. Ece explained their story but honestly I was too busy staring at them to listen properly. There’s something about being underground in Istanbul that makes you feel small and curious at once. I still think about that silence.
