The Experience

We met our guide, Ekin, right in front of the ticket booths at Hagia Sophia — she waved so we couldn’t miss her. She reminded us to keep an eye on our bags and not to follow anyone else (apparently there are a few “helpful” strangers around). I was still fumbling with my scarf for the dress code when Ekin handed me one from her bag, soft and smelling faintly like laundry soap. The entrance fee had to be paid in cash — just a heads up if you’re like me and always forget that part.

Walking into Hagia Sophia felt heavier than I expected. There’s this cool hush, even though it’s busy, and the light comes in all slanted through high windows. Ekin pointed out tiny details in the mosaics — some gold tiles chipped, others bright as new — and explained how it’s been a church, mosque, museum, then mosque again. She slipped between Turkish and English with tourists around us asking questions in half a dozen languages. I tried to pronounce “Ayasofya” properly; Ekin laughed but said I was close enough.

The stairs up to the gallery are steeper than they look (my knees complained), but it’s worth it for the view over the main hall. You can see people below looking up at the same domes you’re standing under — 1,500 years old. The marble is cool under your hand and there’s this faint smell of stone dust mixed with incense. It’s strange thinking how many feet have passed here before ours. We lingered longer than planned because honestly, it didn’t feel right to rush.
