Savor doner kebab and baklava while ferrying between Istanbul’s two continents

A half-day food and drink tour in Istanbul that crosses the Bosphorus by ferry, sampling classic Turkish dishes on both the European and Asian sides in a group capped at eight people. The guide leads you through breakfast spots, street food vendors and neighborhood cafes, stopping at landmarks like Galata Bridge and Maiden's Tower along the way. Ferry tickets, all snacks and refreshments are included; vegetarian alternatives are available on request.

The Experience

The tour starts with Turkish breakfast — the meal Turks take seriously. You visit local breakfast cafes to taste Börek, the crispy pastry pockets filled with cheese or meat, and Menemen, the scrambled-egg-and-pepper dish that appears on almost every table. From there the route moves through the European side, passing Galata Bridge and Rustem Pasha Mosque, stopping for doner kebab, meatballs and pide flatbread at places a guide knows rather than a guidebook. The landmarks are there, but the food is the point.

Around the midway mark, you board the ferry at Eminönü Pier and cross the Bosphorus to Kadıköy on the Asian side. The crossing itself is part of the tour — you see the strait, the bridges, the skyline shift as you move between continents. In Kadıköy the stops continue: more street food, more neighborhood spots, and by the end of the afternoon, baklava and Turkish coffee or tea. The group stays under eight people, which means the guide can move at one pace and you're not herding through a crowd.

The whole thing runs about four and a half hours. Ferry tickets are included, so you don't buy them separately at the pier. All the snacks and drinks along the way are covered — you taste, you move, nothing stops for a transaction. If you eat vegetarian, mention it when you book and the guide will adjust the stops; vegan and gluten-free diets unfortunately can't be accommodated.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to taste what locals eat rather than what restaurants serve tourists, and if crossing the Bosphorus by ferry is part of the experience you're after. The fixed stops and the guide's knowledge mean you're not hunting for food or negotiating where to go — you arrive, eat, and move on, which is what makes a half-day tour actually work.

Top questions

What's the difference between eating on the European side and the Asian side of Istanbul?

The European side — where the tour starts — centers on the older neighborhoods and the busier tourist corridors near Galata Bridge and Eminönü. The Asian side in Kadıköy has a different rhythm: more local, less crowded, and the food leans into what residents actually eat for lunch and dinner rather than what visitors expect. The ferry crossing itself is the boundary, and the guide explains what changes as you move across it.

Do I need to book this tour with other people, or can I go alone?

The tour requires a minimum of two participants to run, so you can't book it solo. If you're traveling alone, you'll join a small group of up to eight people total — the group size is capped there so the pace stays manageable and the guide can answer questions without rushing.

Is there time to sit down and eat, or is it all walking and tasting?

The tour is structured as a series of stops where you taste and eat at each one — breakfast cafes, street vendors, neighborhood spots — rather than one sit-down meal. You're moving between locations, but you're eating real food at each stop, not just samples. The ferry ride gives you a break in the middle.

What language is the guide speaking?

The tour runs in English or Spanish — you choose which one when you book. The guide is live and local, so they can answer questions about the food, the neighborhoods and the landmarks as you go.

Can children come on this tour?

Children are welcome from age seven and up. Younger children can come if they sit on an adult's lap, but the tour is designed for kids old enough to walk between stops and try different foods. The pace is half a day, so it's manageable for families.

What happens if I have dietary restrictions?

Vegetarian alternatives are available — just mention your preference when you reserve. Vegan and gluten-free diets unfortunately can't be accommodated on this tour, so if either applies to you, it's worth checking with the operator before booking.
