The Experience

We’d barely stepped off the ship in Kuşadası when our guide, Mehmet, waved us over with this big friendly grin—he had my name on a sign but somehow already knew who we were. The air smelled like sea salt and something sweet from a nearby bakery (I asked later, it was simit). Our group piled into a van that felt mercifully cool after the sun on the dock, and before I’d even finished wondering how far Ephesus was (about half an hour), we were already winding through olive groves.
