The Experience

The day starts at Göreme Panorama, where the landscape opens across fairy chimneys and the village below. Early morning here catches hot air balloons rising through the valleys—the light and the scale make this the shot most people come for. From there, Uçhisar Castle sits at one of the highest points in the region; climbing it gives you a vantage across the entire terrain: valleys, rock formations, and the villages scattered through them. The walk itself is steep enough to matter, but the view from the top is why people do it.

The middle of the day moves through Pigeon Valley on foot, where the cliffs are riddled with nesting holes and the rock formations tower close enough to touch. Kaymaklı Underground City comes next—a multi-level carved complex that early Christian communities used as shelter, with narrow passages, storage rooms and chambers that go several stories down. You walk through it with your guide explaining the layout and the history, though the scale of the thing speaks for itself. The Göreme Open-Air Museum, a UNESCO site, holds rock-hewn churches and monasteries with frescoes still visible on the stone walls; this is the one stop where entrance fees apply and lines can form, so timing matters.

Paşabağı, called Monks Valley, holds the most distinctive fairy chimneys—some shaped like mushrooms, some with multiple caps stacked on top of each other. The cave dwellings of ancient monks are carved into the bases. Devrent Valley follows, where the rock formations resemble animals and shapes if you let your imagination work: camels, dolphins, a sleeping lion. It's the kind of place where the guide points and you see it, or you don't, and either way the landscape is strange enough to hold your attention. The day ends in Avanos, where you can watch potters at work using techniques unchanged for generations, and try the wheel yourself if you want to make something to take home. Your private driver and guide handle all the navigation and timing; you choose which entrance tickets to buy as you go, and tips to the guide and driver are optional.

Top questions

What is the Kaymaklı Underground City like to walk through?

Kaymaklı Underground City is a multi-level complex carved into the earth, with narrow passageways, kitchens, storage areas and rooms stacked several stories down. Early Christian communities used it as a refuge; your guide walks you through the layout and explains how people lived in this hidden city, though the confined spaces and the depth of the carving make the experience vivid on its own.

Do I need to buy entrance tickets in advance, or are they included?

Entrance tickets for Kaymaklı Underground City, Göreme Open-Air Museum and Paşabağı are not included and you arrange them separately at each site. Your guide and driver handle the stops and timing; you pay for entry as you arrive. This means you control which sites to enter and how long to spend at each one.

What time of day does the tour start, and can I arrange pickup from my hotel?

Pickup from your hotel is included with this private tour. The exact start time depends on your location and preference; confirm the timing when you book so the guide and driver can meet you at the right hour.

Is there time to try pottery in Avanos, or is it just watching?

Avanos pottery workshops let you watch skilled artisans at work and try the wheel yourself if you want to create something. The tour includes time there, so you can decide whether to watch, make a piece, or both; any pottery you create is yours to take home or have shipped later.

How physically demanding is this tour?

The tour is suitable for all fitness levels. Uçhisar Castle involves climbing to the top, which is steep; Pigeon Valley and Paşabağı are walked at a normal pace through valleys and around rock formations. You set the speed with your guide, and you can rest or skip any part that doesn't suit you.

What language does the guide speak?

Your guide speaks English, Spanish or Japanese depending on which tour option you select at checkout. Choose the language that matches your group when you book.
