The Experience
The first thing I remember is the way the light hit those strange rock towers—fairy chimneys, they call them—in Cappadocia. Our guide, Emre, grinned when he saw me just staring. “They look different every hour,” he said. He was right. We’d barely started the tour and already my camera felt pointless; there’s this pink haze in Rose Valley that doesn’t really show up in photos. The air smelled faintly of dust and wild herbs, and somewhere nearby a dog barked at nothing in particular.
We stopped above Pigeon Valley where you can see hundreds of tiny dovecotes carved into the cliffs. Emre told us about how locals used to collect pigeon droppings for their vineyards—honestly, I didn’t expect pigeon stories to be so interesting. The wind picked up a little and you could hear it whistling through the valley. Later, we ducked into a stone workshop and I tried (badly) to say thank you in Turkish to the woman carving souvenirs—she laughed and handed me a tiny owl anyway.
Avanos was next for pottery. There’s something hypnotic about watching clay spin between someone’s hands—my attempt ended up lopsided but nobody seemed to mind. By late afternoon, we were at Salkım Wine House on this terrace with grapevines overhead. The local wine was crisp and cold; paired with cheese and olives, it tasted like summer after a long walk. I still think about that view over the valley as the sun dropped lower—not sure if it was the wine or just that feeling of being far from home but somehow exactly where you’re supposed to be.
