The experience
The tour starts with hotel pickup in Istanbul and a flight to Cappadocia, where a guide meets you at the airport and takes you to your cave hotel for free time to settle in. The cave suite sits in the heart of the region, so you're positioned to start exploring the next morning without wasted travel.
Day two is the Red Tour. You'll visit Devrent Valley (a landscape of surreal rock formations that locals call Imagination Valley), then move to Monks Valley (Paşabağı), where Christian hermits carved cells and churches into three-headed fairy chimneys. In Avanos, you watch pottery being made on the banks of the Red River, which gets its color from the clay it carries. Lunch comes at a local restaurant before you reach the Göreme Open-Air Museum, where Byzantine cave churches and frescoes from the 3rd century onward line the valleys. The day ends with views from Esentepe panoramic point and Uçhisar Castle, the highest rock in the Göreme region.
Day three is the Blue Tour, starting at 9:45am with a hike through the Red and Rose Valleys, ending at Çavuşin Cave Village where troglodyte dwellings show how people lived until the 20th century. You then descend into Kaymakli Underground City, one of the largest and deepest of Cappadocia's underground settlements, with stables, cellars, churches and wineries carved into the rock. The final stop is Pigeon Valley, where dovecotes and abandoned cave homes sit beneath the biggest concentration of fairy chimneys in the region. A 4:30pm transfer takes you to the airport for your return flight to Istanbul.
