The experience
The Medina of Tunis is the anchor of this day: a sprawling medieval maze of covered souks, artisan workshops, hammams, mosques and palaces with carved stucco and marble columns scattered through residential streets lined with brightly painted doorways. From there you move to La Goulette, a waterfront district where cafe terraces line the sea, then on to Carthage, the archaeological site scattered across the modern city and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The ruins sit on high ground with views across the coast.
Sidi Bou Said comes next: a cliff-top village of blue-and-white buildings with cobbled streets and Ottoman-Andalusian architecture, built after Spanish Muslims arrived in the 16th century. If you choose the full-day option with the Bardo Museum, you'll end at the former beylical palace in Tunis that now houses one of Africa's largest collections: Roman mosaics, Phoenician and Punic artifacts, Islamic and medieval pieces that trace the region's history. Lunch at a local restaurant breaks the day between La Goulette and Carthage. A certified guide who speaks English, Italian or French leads the group, and hotel pickup and drop-off are included.
