The experience

What makes this tour work is the pairing of two very different desert experiences in a single day. Ksar Ghilane sits on the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, a natural oasis where you swim in a hot spring fed by the desert itself: the water stays warm year-round. From there, the route moves to Tataouine and its surrounding ksours, the fortified attics that once stored grain and sheltered entire families. Ksar Hedada, one of these ancient Berber structures, was used as a filming location for Star Wars, though the architecture speaks for itself whether you care about the films or not. The day ends at Guermessa, a Berber village perched in the Dahar mountains about 20 km from Tataouine, often called the abandoned city in the sky for the way it clings to the cliffs.

At Ksar Ghilane, you choose between hiking or a camel ride to move through the oasis landscape. Lunch is included during the day. Drinks are available to purchase. The guide speaks English or French and travels with you in an air-conditioned vehicle, which matters over 10 hours in the Sahara. Pickup from your accommodation is part of the booking, and the pace is built to fit both the heat and the distance. This is not a rushed itinerary.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and French.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (5 to 11 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.

What exactly is a ksar, and why are they scattered around Tataouine?

A ksar is a fortified attic, a communal storage structure built by Berber communities to protect grain and other goods from heat and raiders. The ksours around Tataouine, including Ksar Hedada and Guermessa, are centuries old and represent a distinctive architectural response to life in the Sahara's edge. They also served as living spaces during certain seasons, and many remain standing as monuments to Berber ingenuity and history.

Can I swim in the hot spring at Ksar Ghilane, or is it just for looking at?

You swim in the hot spring. It's a natural pool fed by underground water that stays warm throughout the year, and swimming is the main reason most travelers visit Ksar Ghilane. Bring a swimsuit and a towel. The oasis itself is peaceful and the water is the centerpiece of the morning portion of the tour.

Is the camel ride at Ksar Ghilane included, or do I pay extra?

The camel ride is not included in the tour price. You can choose to hike through the oasis landscape instead, or you can arrange a camel ride separately at Ksar Ghilane. Either way, you spend time exploring the oasis before moving on to Tataouine.

How long does the drive take between Ksar Ghilane and Tataouine?

The tour spans 10 hours total, including all stops, swimming time, lunch and exploration of the ksours and Guermessa. Ksar Ghilane and Tataouine are in the same region of southern Tunisia, so the drive between them is part of the day's flow rather than a separate journey.

What's the difference between Guermessa and the other ksours we visit?

Guermessa is a Berber village built into the cliffs of the Dahar mountains, about 20 km from Tataouine. Unlike the fortified storage structures like Ksar Hedada, Guermessa is a residential settlement where families lived and worked. It's often called the abandoned city in the sky because of how dramatically it perches on the mountainside, and it offers a different perspective on how Berber communities adapted to the desert landscape.
