The experience
Five and a half hours takes you through two villages that sit apart from the tourist circuit. Takrouna perches on a hill. You walk its narrow streets past traditional houses, meet locals who weave carpets and throw pottery, and stop for coffee or mint tea. The views across the surrounding plain are the reason people photograph it, and the crafts are real, not staged for visitors. From there you move to Zriba El Olia, a quieter village where the rhythm is slower and the houses are older.
Zriba El Olia is where you settle into the pace of rural Tunisia. The alleys are narrow and quiet, the traditional houses sit close together, and a small cafe serves mint tea the way it has for years. You have time to sit, to watch the light change, to talk to whoever is there. The landscapes around both villages give you the kind of views that make the drive worthwhile: open plains, distant hills, the shape of the land itself.
The tour includes pickup from your Mahdia hotel, an air-conditioned vehicle for the drive, entrance to both villages, and bottled water throughout. A guide who speaks your language (English, Spanish, Italian, French or Arabic) walks with you and explains what you're seeing. Children from age 2 travel free. You'll need a moderate level of fitness to walk the narrow, uneven streets of both villages, but there's no rushing. The pace is set by the group.

Is this one for you?The guide speaks your language fluently, so you follow the commentary and the stories about each village without strain. This works well if you want cultural context and real conversation with a local, rather than a silent walk or a guide who struggles with English.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 11 years).
What are the narrow streets of Takrouna actually like to walk?
Takrouna's streets are steep, uneven and tightly built between traditional stone houses. They're walkable at a steady pace, but the ground is not smooth, so sturdy shoes help. The village sits on a hill, so there's climbing involved, though the guide sets a comfortable speed and you can rest whenever you need to.
Can I buy carpets or pottery directly from the craftspeople in these villages?
Yes. Takrouna is known for its local weavers and potters, and you'll see them at work in their homes and small shops. You can talk to them, watch them work, and buy directly if something appeals to you. Prices are negotiable, and the pieces are genuine handmade work, not mass-produced.
How long do you actually spend in each village?
The tour is structured to give you real time in both places, not a quick stop. Takrouna gets enough time to walk the main streets, meet craftspeople and take photos. Zriba El Olia is where you slow down further, sit in a cafe and absorb the quiet. The exact split depends on the group's pace, but neither village is rushed.
Is the mint tea included, or do I pay for it separately?
The tea break in Zriba El Olia is part of the tour experience, and the cost of mint tea is included. You sit in a traditional cafe, and the guide arranges it as part of the stop.
What time does the tour start and end?
Pickup happens from your Mahdia hotel in the morning. The full tour runs five and a half hours, so you're back by early afternoon. Exact times depend on your hotel location and the operator's schedule, so confirm the pickup time when you book.
