The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the salty air — it hit me right as we stepped off at Vuna Wharf. Our guide, Sione, waved a sign and grinned like he’d been waiting for us all morning (maybe he had). We piled into a van with a few other travelers — everyone still half-asleep but curious. The drive out of Nuku’alofa was bumpy in that way where you can feel every pothole under your seat. I liked it, honestly. It felt real. Sione pointed out the royal palace as we passed — “That’s where the King stays when he’s here,” he said, and someone in the back whispered they’d never seen a king’s house before.

We stopped at this massive trilithon called Ha’amonga ‘a Maui — it looked ancient and kind of mysterious, just sitting there in the grass. Sione told us stories about its history (I only caught half because I got distracted by a dog chasing chickens nearby). Then came the blowholes. You hear them before you see them — this deep thump and hiss as water shoots up through holes in the rocks. The spray actually hit my face; it tasted like pure ocean. Everyone laughed when one guy tried to get a selfie and almost got soaked head-to-toe.

I didn’t expect pigs fishing on the beach — no joke, just rooting around in the shallows like they owned the place. Sione said they’ve been doing that forever. There was something weirdly peaceful about watching them while eating slices of watermelon from our guide’s cooler (so sweet and cold after walking under that sun). Later we reached Anahulu Cave; I hesitated before jumping into the pool inside, but it was so clear and cool I forgot my nerves for a second. It smelled earthy down there, almost like rain on stone.

By late afternoon we wandered among old royal tombs and watched flying foxes hanging upside down in a cemetery — apparently protected by Tonga’s royals themselves. Someone asked if they were dangerous; Sione just shrugged and said “Only if you’re a mango.” I still think about that view from the natural land bridge over the sea — wild cliffs, blue everywhere, wind loud enough to drown out your thoughts for a minute or two.
