Phuket Elephant Sanctuary sits on 30 acres bordering Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, a jungle landscape of ponds, open fields and hillsides where the elephants choose how to spend their day. The morning starts at the Tree Top Lounge with an educational video about why these animals need protection, then you walk down into the sanctuary itself. From observation platforms called Salas, you watch the elephants at a safe distance: bathing in the pond, playing with each other, moving through the forest on their own terms. The sanctuary buys all its rescued elephants to make this their permanent home, and provides veterinary care for older and injured animals.
The visit runs about 3.5 hours total. After the observation walk, you sit down to a Thai vegetarian lunch buffet with over 15 choices. The sanctuary provides socks, boots, umbrellas, rain coats and mosquito spray. You bring a refill water bottle if you can, though bottled water is supplied. Guides speak English.
