The Experience

We stepped out onto Bangla Road just after 9:30pm—already loud, already bright, like someone turned up the world’s volume. Our guide, Tik, waved us over at Heroes Bar (she had this neon wristband so we couldn’t miss her). There was this thick smell of grilled meat and sweet cocktails mixing with the air. I didn’t expect to laugh so much before we even left the first bar—Tik made us introduce ourselves by sharing our favorite drink. Someone said “anything cold,” which felt about right in that heat.

After our first free shot (something green and suspiciously sweet), we moved as a group down the street. The music changed every few meters—reggaeton blaring from one place, then a sudden blast of 90s pop from another. The second bar had these sticky tables and a bartender who tried to teach us a Thai drinking cheer (I absolutely butchered it; Tik just grinned). It was easy to lose track of time with all the lights and shouting and people dancing in flip-flops.

The club at the end was packed—sweaty, loud, but somehow friendly. We got our last shot near the DJ booth (I think it was vodka? hard to tell by then) and ended up dancing with some locals who pulled us into their circle. At some point I realized my voice was hoarse from shouting over the music, but honestly, I didn’t care. Walking back out onto Bangla Road around 2am felt surreal—like stepping out of a movie set. I still think about that blur of colors and laughter whenever I hear bad karaoke now.
