The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the smell — wet earth and something sweet, maybe from the coconut trees? We’d barely left Pattaya city when our guide, Lek, grinned at us like he knew what was coming. The helmets were snug and honestly I was nervous about the first stretch. But as soon as we got moving, bouncing over sandy tracks past banana groves and rubber trees, I forgot about everything except the trail in front of me. The bikes (I picked a Kawasaki) felt solid even when we hit those rocky bits near Chad Nok Dam. Lek kept checking on us, shouting back tips when someone got stuck in a rut — which happened to me more than once. He just laughed and helped me out. There’s no judgment here.

I didn’t expect to see so much variety on this day trip — one minute we were weaving through eucalyptus woods where the light went greenish and cool, next minute flying across open farmland with pineapple fields stretching out under that heavy Thai sky. Sometimes you’d catch a glimpse of water buffalo or hear birds going nuts somewhere in the trees. We stopped at a stream to splash off some mud (and yeah, there was plenty), and I realized my arms were already aching but it felt good. Like I’d actually done something real.

Lunch was up on a hillside — nothing fancy but honestly after all that riding it tasted like the best thing ever. Fried rice, cold drinks, everyone swapping stories about who wiped out where. Our guide told us how he grew up riding these trails before tourists ever came out here. That stuck with me for some reason. After lunch there were more trails: deep sand that made my heart race, then some narrow single-tracks where you had to trust your instincts (and hope you didn’t clip a tree). By the end my boots were soaked and I was tired in a way I hadn’t felt for years — but happy too.

Back at base they handed out cold beers and fresh towels; I sat there watching the sun go down behind some distant hills, just listening to everyone’s voices mixing with the sound of bikes cooling off. It’s only a few kilometers from Pattaya but it feels like another world out there. Still think about that view sometimes when I hear engines revving anywhere else.
